Former Leeds United striker Mirco Antenucci has hailed the best achievement of his career after his goals helped SPAL to survive in Serie A.

The Italian hitman departed Leeds after he was not offered a new contract in 2016 and returned to his homeland with SPAL.

He made an instant impact, scoring 18 goals in Serie B to help the club to an historic promotion to Serie A.

The odds were stacked against SPAL remaining in the top flight, but they kept faith with the former Leeds man and he did not disappoint, netting eleven times, including twice on Sunday in a 3-1 win over Sampdoria, to secure the club's top flight status.

And Antenucci admits that he has just signed off on his best ever season.

"It is definitely the best moment of my career", he said on Sky Italia, when asked about his eleven-goal haul.

"I did not expect it.

"I felt compelled to give more to the fans.

"It is the best season of my career. We never gave up and behind us there is a club that works so well."

Now Antenucci is already turning his attention towards another battle to keep SPAL in Serie A next season, explaining he will rest up and go again.

"We'll see each other here in a few months and it's no small thing, we will fight until the end, like this year."

Following 38 Serie A games, SPAL have finished 17th, three points clear of the drop zone.
