Former Scottish top flight star Stuart Lovell thinks that the impact Steven Gerrard could have at Rangers should not be underestimated.

Liverpool legend Gerrard is taking the manager's job at Ibrox from 1st June on a four-year contract and is charged with closing the gap to Celtic.

While the amount of transfer work Rangers will do over the summer is yet to be seen, expectations are already building.

Former Hibernian and Livingston star Lovell believes that overhauling Celtic in a single push would be a bridge too far for the Gers, however he has warned that the Gerrard effect should not be played down.

"You can't underestimate the impact that Steven Gerrard might have", Lovell said on BT Sport.

"If they can generate some commercial assistance for him to bring in some good signings and loan players then I can't see why they can't close the gap again.

"It would be a stretch to say they can win the league next year."

Rangers have already brought in two players in the shape of goalkeeper Allan McGregor and midfielder Scott Arfield.

Gerrard, who is bringing in Gary McAllister as his assistant, has been linked with wanting to snap up a host of further players, including former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel.
