Ajax are closing in on confirming the signature of Argentine defender Lisandro Magallan, which could open the door for Tottenham Hotspur target Matthijs de Ligt to leave this summer.

The Amsterdam giants have reached an agreement over a transfer fee for Magallan and will pay Boca Juniors up to €9.5m for the defender.

According to Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur, the Argentine could be announced as a new Ajax player as early as Tuesday or Wednesday, with a five-year contract on the table for him in the Netherlands.

The 24-year-old, who was on the radar of Manchester City in his younger days, will bolster Ajax's defensive options, but his arrival will also raise question marks about whether the club are preparing for De Ligt to move on.

Tottenham are big fans of De Ligt and have been linked with wanting to take him to White Hart Lane this summer.

Ajax would likely see selling the 18-year-old as easier if they already have Magallan through the door.

Tottenham have regularly done defensive business with Ajax and snapped up defenders Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez from the Dutch club, in an indication of their good relationship.
