David May has indicated that Manchester United should look to emulate Manchester City’s spending on full-backs in the ongoing transfer window.

Big changes are expected at Manchester United this summer after an underwhelming season where they finished second behind runaway champions Manchester City and lost in the FA Cup final on Saturday against Chelsea.

Mourinho is set to restructure his defence with the players such as Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Juventus’ Alex Sandro tipped in some quarters to join Manchester United in the ongoing transfer window.

May feels the club should look to sign two fresh full-backs and indicated that despite Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia’s performances, the team need fresher legs in those areas.

The former Manchester United defender admits Pep Guardiola’s decision to spend big on full-backs last summer paid rich dividends as it completely changed Manchester City's game.

May said on MUTV’s the Paddy Crerand Show: “I’ll go for two new full-backs.

“Ash has done ever so well, love him to bits and Tony V the same, but we all had a laugh at Pep spending £100m on full-backs.

“We all said £100m on full-backs is mental, but they have made a difference.”

Atletico Madrid right-back Sime Vrsaljko has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.
