Former Manchester United defender David May has stressed that Jose Mourinho has every right to feel frustrated with his players and is correct to have a go at them in public.

Mourinho cut a frustrated figure at the end of the FA Cup final on Saturday when his side lost to Chelsea at Wembley and blew their last chance to win silverware at the end of the season.

Manchester United finished second in the league table, but they were 19 points behind champions Manchester City and Mourinho has, from time-to-time, called out his players out for their poor performances.

Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and eventually Romelu Lukaku on Saturday have all come under Mourinho’s fire and May insisted that the Manchester United boss has every right to feel frustrated.

He stressed that it is wrong to judge Mourinho by Sir Alex Ferguson’s management style and believes the current Manchester United boss must be given the leeway to manage the players the way he wants to.

The former defender said on MUTV’s the Paddy Crerand Show: “I don’t blame the manager for having a go at the players because you know what, a lot of them need it.

“I know Sir Alex never did it in public but that was Sir Alex, that’s the way he managed and Jose is a different manager.

“If he feels that the players need a rollicking out in public then that’s the way he does it. We can’t keep going back to how Sir Alex used to do things. Things have moved on and changed.

“If the gaffer thinks that’s the way he is going to get the best out of a player, then he does it and people need to stand by it and applaud for him it and not have a go at him.”

And May continued: “He must be frustrated as well. Don’t tell me he sends a team out to play the way we do.

“He must be as frustrated as the fans because we have a good squad of players and it’s up to them to pull themselves out of it as well.”
