Newcastle United face opposition for the signature of Italian midfielder Stefano Sturaro, who is wanted by one of his former clubs in the shape of Genoa.

The 25-year-old is on the books at Serie A champions Juventus, but is well known to Genoa following a stint at the club in the 2014/15 campaign and has not been forgotten by the Rossoblu.

And Genoa general manager Giorgio Perinetti has admitted that if the opportunity to sign Sturaro arose this summer then he personally would pull the trigger on a move for the 25-year-old.

The Genoa official told Telenord: "He is a player who has found a role, so much so that [Juventus coach] Massimiliano Allegri did not want to give up on him last season.

"If Juventus put him on the plate, I would personally go for him, but these are premature situations", he added.

Sturaro also has admirers in the Premier League where it has been claimed Rafael Benitez is eyeing taking him to Newcastle in time for next term.

The midfielder made 19 appearances across all competitions for Juventus this season, helping the club retain their Serie A title.

Juventus have Sturaro under contract until the summe of 2021.
