Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has blasted Jurgen Klopp for persisting with Loris Karius after the goalkeeper cost the Reds the Champions League on Saturday night with two errors in a 3-1 defeat against Real Madrid.

Liverpool were well in the game in Kyiv, but Karius made errors which led to Real Madrid's first and third goals, handing the Spaniards a 13th European Cup.

Karius' first mistake saw him roll the ball out to Karim Benzema, who reacted quickly and prodded it past the German.

Then, with Liverpool chasing the game at 2-1 down, a tame, long-range Gareth Bale shot was fumbled by Karius and went into the back of the net, making it 3-1.

Karius has made errors throughout his time at Liverpool and Peterborough chairman MacAnthony says the writing was on the wall when the German was picked.

"Can you imagine being one of those 10 players watching their GK playing like this", MacAnthony wrote on Twitter.

"JK made him his No 1.. Everybody in world football could see months ago he is accident waiting to happen.

"Devastating end to season. 3rd cup final defeat in 3 seasons. 6 in a row for JK."

The Liverpool boss decided to drop Simon Mignolet in favour of Karius earlier this season, despite the Belgian doing little to earn the axe.

Klopp's record in finals may now be a major cause of concern for Liverpool fans, with the German having lost his last six cup final appearances.

Liverpool are though back in the Champions League next season after finishing fourth in the Premier League this term.
