Former Germany and Bayern Munich captain Lothar Matthaus has termed Loris Karius’ pitiful showing in the Champions League final the worst goalkeeping performances of the last two or three decades.

Mohamed Salah’s injury and eventual substitution on the half-hour mark dealt a heavy blow to Liverpool, but Karius’ performance between the sticks in the second half killed Jurgen Klopp’s side.

His first error gifted Karim Benzema a goal when the Frenchman’s outstretched leg met Karius’ pitiful attempt to release a pass to a Liverpool defender.

He could do little to stop Gareth Bale’s first goal, but the Welshman’s second was another mistake from the German when he made mess of a 30-yard shot and allowed the ball to slip through his hands and into the goal.

Matthaus believes he has not seen a more awful goalkeeping performances in the last two or three decades and believes Karius can never be a world class performer between the sticks because he has too many mistakes in his game.

“That was the worst goalkeeping performance in the last 20 to 30 years”, the German World Cup winner said on Sky Deutschland.

“Karius is not a world class goalkeeper because in general he makes these mistakes again and again.”

There are already calls for Klopp to sign a top class goalkeeper in the summer to address the problem as both Karius and Simon Mignolet have failed to impress.
