Newcastle United target Joshua King has refused to rule out a move away from Bournemouth amid unhappiness with where Eddie Howe has been playing him.

King netted 16 league goals in the 2016/17 campaign for the Cherries, but managed only eight in the recently concluded campaign after being shifted to a deeper role by Howe.

The Norway international admits that he is unhappy with his positional change and indicated that it is largely the reason for his decreased goal return.

King told Norwegian daily VG: "I do not like to blame anything, but I have to say that I was surprised that I returned in pre-season and was switched to a deeper position than [that in which] I did so well in the year before.

"I started one match as the spearhead [up front] this year", he continued.

"I am 110 per cent unhappy with the change in position.

"I am not satisfied and my coach knows.

"I think most people know where I am the best."

King has been linked with being wanted by Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez and while he is not pushing for a transfer away from Bournemouth, the attacker stopped short of ruling it out, with words which will likely encourage the Magpies.

"I have three years left on my contract and I am a Bournemouth player now, but in football you never know.

"I just want to play in the position I am best at.

"Why change something that worked so well?

"I do not understand and maybe it has been a bit in my mind all season", he added.

Bournemouth snapped King up from Blackburn Rovers in 2015 and he is under contract at the Cherries until the summer of 2021.

It remains to be seen whether the 26-year-old looks to move away from Bournemouth in the summer or whether Howe can reassure him over his role on the south coast.
