Former Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz has insisted that Xherdan Shaqiri will have to grab his opportunities at Anfield as he believes he will  not feature in Jurgen Klopp’s starting eleven initially.

Liverpool completed a move to sign the Switzerland winger from Stoke on Friday as Klopp continues to add more options to his squad ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

Shaqiri impressed last season in a poor Stoke team who were relegated from the Premier League and he will be looking to take the next step in his career at Anfield.

However, Henchoz warned his compatriot that the pressure at Liverpool will be completely different and he needs his head to be in the right place to be a success at Anfield.

The former Red also conceded that he cannot see Shaqiri playing in the starting eleven initially and it is important that he makes the most of the chances he will get to make a name for himself at Liverpool.

Henchoz told Swiss daily Blick: “The key question is – how do you handle pressure?

“You have to be mentally ready for Liverpool.”

He continued: “It is difficult at the moment to imagine Shaqiri playing in the starting eleven.

“Now he has to prove what he can do. If he gets his change he must deliver immediately.

“Average is not enough at Liverpool.”
