Mainz CEO Stefan Hofmann insists that even selling Arsenal target Jean-Philippe Gbamin for €50m would not make sense, while declaring there to be no readily available replacement for the Ivorian.

The Bundesliga outfit recently turned down an offer from an unnamed English club for Gbamin, with €35m deemed not enough to sell the defensive midfielder.

Gbamin has been linked with Arsenal, but even if the Gunners put €50m on the table, Hofmann does not feel it would be enough to play ball, with a replacement just not available.

The CEO told German daily Bild: "Let's just imagine that someone even offered us €50m for him.

"There would be 30 per cent tax, so that would already be €15m gone.

"But the market is simply not providing any adequate replacement at the moment."

Mainz are under no pressure to sell the player this summer, with his contract at the club running until the summer of 2022.

The Ivory Coast international was signed by Mainz from French club Lens in 2016 and caught the eye with his performances in the Bundesliga last season.

He played for France at youth level, but now turns out for the Ivory Coast.
