Newcastle United are in pursuit of alternative centre-back options despite showing an interest in Toulouse defender Christopher Jullien this summer.

Rafael Benitez wants to make several additions to his squad before Thursday’s Premier League deadline day and signing a defender is believed to be a priority.

Newcastle have been keeping tabs on Toulouse centre-back Jullien and they have been in touch with the Ligue 1 club over taking him to England this summer.

However, the Magpies are yet to make an offer despite the player being keen on a move and it seems Toulouse are unlikely to receive a bid from the Premier League outfit.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle are interested in the Ligue 1 defender but for the moment they are searching for alternatives in the transfer market.

It seems the Magpies have cooled the track leading towards Jullien and are now in the market for alternative options who could reinforce their centre-back options for next season.

Benitez has been pushing hard to bring in more players in order to strengthen the squad and is desperate for further additions before Thursday’s deadline.

The Newcastle manager has again found it hard to convince owner Mike Ashley to release the required funds.
