Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic is to have a medical with Chelsea later today, according to Sky Sports News.

The Blues have agreed a season-long loan deal for the Croatia international schemer and are now closing in on taking him to Stamford Bridge.

Kovacic has been keen to move on this summer as he seeks the regular game time he found elusive in Spain last term.

And with Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri wanting to add another midfielder to the mix, the swoop for Kovacic has been put in place.

It remains to be seen whether the deal will include any purchase option for the Blues to activate in the event that Kovacic pulls up trees in the Premier League.

Chelsea will now put the player through his medical paces and look to quickly close out the deal.

The Blues only have until 5pm on Thursday to sign Kovacic due to Premier League clubs choosing to end their transfer window early.

Real Madrid on the other hand have until the end of the month to do their business.
