Newcastle United's plans for Valenciennes defender Sikou Niakate have taken a possible move off the table.

The Magpies are keen on the highly rated teenage centre-back and have been linked with wanting to take him to St. James' Park this summer.

But no deal is expected to happen before the Premier League transfer window closes today, with the reason being Newcastle's plans for the defender.

Indeed, while Newcastle are keen to land Niakate, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, they are only proposing to let him develop with their Under-23s.

And as such, no transfer is expected to go through today, with Premier League clubs only having until 5pm to make signings.

Young Niakate is also on Tottenham Hotspur's radar.

Spurs have been taking in the defender's performances and could choose to make a move for his signature at some point.

Niakate, who turned 19 years old last month, has represented France at Under-19 level.
