Roma are set to step up their pursuit of Steven N'Zonzi, with Arsenal out of the picture due to the closure of the transfer window in the Premier League.

N'Zonzi was hoping to leave Sevilla for the Premier League this summer and Arsenal boss Unai Emery was claimed to be interested in taking him to the Emirates Stadium.

But Sevilla would not drop their demands for his €40m release clause to be paid and Roma, who were also tracking N'Zonzi, are now stepping up their efforts to sign him.

Roma sporting director Monchi is in Spain at present and although it has been claimed his trip is for family reasons, according to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, he is set to work on the N'Zonzi deal.

It is claimed that Sevilla could now soften their stance on N'Zonzi after the Premier League window closed and accept a bid of €25m plus bonus payments.

The France international has already told Sevilla that he is keen to move on for a fresh challenge this summer.

And with Arsenal incapable of rivalling them, Roma are now free to work on the negotiations.

Sevilla signed N'Zonzi from Stoke City in 2015.
