Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor believes the Reds are in the best position to push Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.

Liverpool have been the heaviest spenders in the Premier League this summer and have accumulated talent worth more than £170m in the transfer market.

Despite finishing fourth and 25 points behind champions Manchester City last season, many believe the Reds are the ones who will really challenge Pep Guardiola’s side for the league title, above the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham.

Mellor also feels the same, but insisted that Liverpool's spending this summer should be placed into the context of what Manchester City have spent over the last few years to rebuild their squad.

But he is certain that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side at the moment look like the most likely team to stop Manchester City from winning back-to-back league titles.

Asked if wining the league title is a realistic goal for Liverpool, Mellor told LFC TV: “Yes, I think so.

“City last season were the best, because they were consistent.

"You are talking about Liverpool spending money this transfer window, City have spent awful lot in the last few years and they are now getting the benefit under Pep Guardiola.

“He has a certain way of playing and last season they looked the best.

“We look to be in the best position to challenge them this season and that’s the encouraging thing as we can really push them for the Premier League title.”

Jurgen Klopp has already insisted that Manchester City are by far favourites to win the Premier League again this season.
