Liverpool legend Gary Gillespie thinks Daniel Sturridge had a reality check with his switch to West Brom last season.

Sturridge struggled for game time at Liverpool last season, with injuries playing their part, and opted to head out on loan to West Brom for the second half of the campaign.

The Baggies, who were fighting relegation, were considered to have scored a coup in snapping him up, but Sturridge made just six appearances and failed to score, as injuries again struck.

Sturridge is back at Liverpool now and came off the bench to score in the Reds' 4-0 win over West Ham on their Premier League opener on Sunday.

And Gillespie thinks that the West Brom experience has made Sturridge appreciate being at Liverpool more.

"I think Daniel Sturridge had a reality check last year when he went to West Brom", Gillespie said on LFC TV.

"Sometimes when you move away you don't realise how good you've got it at Liverpool.

"And let's be honest, Liverpool is a great club to be at.

"He's maybe realised when he's gone to West Brom that is where it's at, at Liverpool, not at West Brom.

"He probably realised he wasn't playing with anywhere the same level of quality players he was at Liverpool."

Sturridge turned down a move to Newcastle United to head to West Brom, but he could not help the Baggies avoid relegation to the Championship.
