Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer thinks that Rangers target Dominic Solanke needs to get away from Anfield on a loan deal.

Solanke has fallen further down the pecking order at Liverpool this summer following the Reds strengthening their attacking options and he faces a battle to earn game time.

The striker has been heavily linked with a move to link up with Steven Gerrard at Rangers and McAteer thinks much like Divock Origi, Solanke should go out on loan.

McAteer insists that Solanke needs to play and only gets better when he does.

McAteer told LFC TV: "Origi could do with another season on loan and Solanke could do with game time.

"The question mark is Daniel Sturridge, whether you can keep him fit [if you loan both out].

"I think Solanke for himself needs to play. He needs game time and he seems to be one of those players who gets better the more he plays.

"If he doesn't play, it's not good for him.

"Origi needs to go out and develop more, but I would keep Daniel Sturridge and let the two go on loan."

Sturridge made his case for a key role at Liverpool this season by scoring the Reds' fourth in a 4-0 win over West Ham on Sunday, when he came off the bench.

Neither Solanke or Origi managed a spot in the matchday squad.

Rangers boss Gerrard has so far tried to keep a lid on speculation the Gers want to land Solanke on loan.
