Former Roma goalkeeper Zibi Boniek has conceded that the club will find it hard to justify their ambition to win trophies if they keep selling players’ of Alisson’s quality.

Roma sold the Brazilian goalkeeper to Liverpool earlier in the summer for a then world record fee for a shot-stopper, and after insisting over the last few months that he would stay.

The Roma officials have stressed that the money on offer was too good to refuse, but Boniek believes how can the club show any ambition if they keep selling their best players.

The former Giallorossi is aware of the financial situation at the club and admits that Roma cannot develop in the way they want to until they have their own stadium.

He told Italian daily Corriere dello Sport: “It’s hard to make people believe that you want to win something and then you sell Alisson.

“The American [Roma president James Pallotta] controls the purse strings and by his own admission, the club will not grow without the ownership of their own stadium.”
