Newcastle United target Marlon is closing in on a move to Sassuolo after the Serie A club reached an agreement with Barcelona.

The Brazilian centre-back was on Newcastle’s radar this summer and the club tried to push through a deal on deadline day last week in order to take him to England.

However, the Magpies failed to obtain a work permit for the 22-year-old and the negotiations collapsed.

And now the defender could be on his way to Italy as according to Sky Italia, Sassuolo have successfully negotiated a deal with Barcelona for the Brazilian centre-back.

His passage to Italy now depends on him agreeing a contract with the Serie A club and his agent is expected to hold talks with Sassuolo soon to work out an agreement.

The Italian club are not expecting further hurdles and are confident of convincing the player and his representatives over agreeing to a move to Italy.

With the Premier League window closed, the Serie A outfit have a clear run at Marlon as Newcastle won’t be able to re-enter negotiations for the 22-year-old.

Marlon joined Barcelona from Fluminense last summer and spent the last season on loan in France at Nice.
