Aston Villa are in no mood to sell midfielder Birkir Bjarnason this summer despite the player agreeing terms on a contract with Serie A outfit Empoli.

The 30-year-old midfielder scored the last gasp winner at the weekend when Aston Villa beat Wigan Athletic in a pulsating Championship game, which ended 3-2.

However, there are no guarantees that the Iceland international will be at Villa Park by the end of the month as Empoli are interested in taking him to Italy this summer.

A former Pescara and Sampdoria player, Bjarnason has emerged as a top target for Empoli and the club have already agreed personal terms with the player’s representatives.

But they are facing a resistant Aston Villa and according to Italian daily La Nazione, the Championship outfit are not keen to entertain any negotiations to sell the midfielder.

Steve Bruce considers the experienced international a key part of his plans at Villa Park as he looks to earn promotion back to the Premier League for the club.

The transfer window in Italy closes on Friday and Aston Villa have until the end of the week to resist offers from Empoli for Bjarnason.

Aston Villa signed the Iceland international from Basel in January last year and he has made 39 appearances for the club thus far.
