Scotland manager Alex McLeish believes the presence of Steven Gerrard will help Rangers' players to take their game to a higher level.

The former Liverpool captain has not lost any of his first seven competitive games in charge of Rangers and potentially they are now three games away from the Europa League group stage.

The Glasgow giants have shown improvement under Gerrard this summer and there is renewed hope around Ibrox that the club will re-emerge as a force in Scottish football this season.

McLeish admits that the midfield legend has provided a fresh lease of life to Rangers and there is clear evidence that the club have moved forward under his tutelage.

The Scotland boss also believes the new coaching staff are having a profound effect on the personal at Rangers and the players are looking to take their game to the next level under Gerrard.

"Steven Gerrard has come in and given Rangers a new lease of life", McLeish told BBC Scotland.

"If you compare it to last season then you have to say its immense strides Rangers have taken under Steven.

"Gary McAllister is a very close friend and these guys have the belief, knowledge and gravitas to be at a club like Rangers.

"I think they inspire other players. Players that maybe didn't do quite so well will now probably play to a level higher than they thought they were capable of.

"That's the type of experience that Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister bring to Rangers."

Rangers will travel to Maribor on Thursday for the second leg of their Europa League third round qualifier.
