Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has backed Alfredo Morelos to score plenty of goals for the Gers this season if the Colombian can brush up his disciplinary issues on the pitch.

The Kilmarnock skipper, who scored prolifically during two different spells at Ibrox, claims that Morelos can replicate the same kind of form with the Gers if he can keep his head down and work hard.

Morelos has started the season in promising fashion for Rangers after scoring in the victories over both Osijek and Maribor in the Europa League qualifiers, while also netting the opening goal in a 2-0 win over St Mirren on Sunday.

However, the player is far from the finished article and his frailties with respect to discipline came to light during the club’s 1-1 draw against Aberdeen on the opening day of the season when he got sent off in the 12th minute when he lashed out at Scott McKenna.

Boyd admitted that it is only natural that the opposition try to provoke a player who is learning his trade at Rangers.

The marksman also admitted that Morelos has to mature positively to tackle such situations if he is to establish himself as a central figure at Ibrox.

“If he does ignore defenders and concentrates on what he needs to do, I’m sure he can get close to that 20 or 25-goal target”, Boyd told the Sunday Herald.

“Pedro Caixinha said last year that Morelos is easily wound up. It’s something you have to deal with as a young player.

“You’re playing for Rangers, you’re scoring goals, you’re a threat – teams will try to do something to put you off. He is a handful but that’s just the way he is.

“For me, the best way to shut somebody up is to score a goal. It might take until the 89th minute but it’s the best way.

“Morelos has definitely got that in. He keeps going to the last whistle but he needs to learn to ignore things because he is going to be a target for defenders”, he added.

Rangers will now face Boyd’s Kilmarnock in a Scottish League Cup second round clash on Sunday.
