Former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae has hailed the Gers for progressing to the Europa League playoff round.

Steven Gerrard's men held a 3-1 lead over Maribor from the first leg at Ibrox and stood firm to withstand a Slovenian storm in the second leg to earn a 0-0 draw.

The Scottish giants have now booked their spot in the playoff round, where they will face Russian side Ufa.

And former Rangers star Rae is delighted with what he has seen, writing on Twitter: "Outstanding performance over 2 legs from Rangers against a good Maribor team. The progress over the last few months is to be applauded."

And now Rangers reserve team coach Peter Lovenkrands is looking forward to the tie against Ufa.

Lovenkrands wrote: "Well done Rangers. Done the business tonight. Looking forward to the game on Thursday at Ibrox."

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor saved a penalty in injury time to make sure that Maribor could not breach the Gers backline.

Former Hibernian forward Tam McManus feels the veteran shot-stopper is the signing of the summer for Rangers.

"The best bit of business Rangers have done this summer on the playing side. Top quality goalkeeper. Been outstanding so far", he wrote.

Now Rangers boss Gerrard will look to plot a path past Ufa and into the group stage.
