Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes if Manchester City decide to concentrate on winning the Champions League it could open the door for Liverpool to win the league.

A thrilling run to the Champions League final last season coupled with a summer of heavy investment has turned Liverpool into contenders to challenge Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this term.

Many have already predicted that Liverpool look like the only team who could prevent Manchester City from becoming the first side to win back-to-back Premier League titles since 2009.

Manchester United legend Scholes has also been reading from the same hymn sheet and feels the Reds’ summer business has been the key behind their strength.

He feels Liverpool could take advantage and their 28-year title drought if Manchester City decided to pour their resources into winning the Champions League this season.

Scholes told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think Liverpool can push Manchester City, they were an exciting team to watch and now they have made additions to their team.

“They were desperate for a goalkeeper and with Naby Keita coming in, he looks a good player from his first game.

“It will be interesting to see what City will be like, could they take their eye off the ball and concentrate on the Champions League?

“Liverpool are the best equipped to give them a run for their money."

The Reds opened their league campaign with a 4-0 win over West Ham at Anfield on Sunday.
