Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Paul Pogba should be made club captain if that allows him to take his game to the next level, but feels the Frenchman is yet to consistently perform at Old Trafford.

In the absence of Antonio Valencia, Pogba led the Manchester United side out last week against Leicester City and gave a steering midfield performance in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

The Frenchman also indicated not everything is alright behind the scenes with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, but the club have come out fighting against all such reports.

The World Cup winner thrived with the added responsibility against the Foxes and Scholes believes if leadership is the key to unlocking Pogba’s potential at Manchester United, then he should be made club captain.

However, the Manchester United legend feels the Frenchman cannot blow hot and cold and needs to be more consistent if his side are to challenge Manchester City for the title.

He also added that Manchester United should do everything to keep their best player at the club despite links with Barcelona.

The midfield legend said on BBC Radio 5 Live: "He showed desire against Leicester but he should show that every week.

"He should have been made captain when we signed him, give him some responsibility, there is not one standout person.

“Hopefully he can keep it, he started OK, nothing special but if he can thrive with responsibility then keep him with the armband.

"I just don't see Pogba as a Barcelona type player.

"We hope he stays, every team wants to keep their best players and we want him to stay.

“He has amazing qualities but has not shown them enough. Hopefully he can drive United to a title challenge."

Mourinho and Pogba’s relationship has been in choppy waters for a while and the club are hopeful that they will sort out their issues over the course of the season.
