Russian side Rubin Kazan are pushing to sign Inter midfielder Joao Mario, who was the subject of late Premier League window interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Mario was linked with a host of clubs from England before he ran out of time to move to the Premier League, but he is still looking for an exit from Inter.

It remains to be seen if a move which appeals to the Portugal international will come along, but according to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Rubin Kazan are trying to sign him.

They are claimed to be closing in on Mario and if he moves, it would effectively end any chance of a Premier League club signing him in January.

Mario also still has interest from Spanish La Liga side Real Betis.

The Portuguese spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United.

The midfielder was linked with a return to West Ham this summer, while Leicester City and Everton were also mooted to be keen on Mario.

He was even, in the dying hours of the Premier League transfer window, claimed to have turned down a move to Chelsea, something he later denied.
