Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson is impressed with just how well drilled Steven Gerrard has his Gers team.

Gerrard guided Rangers through to the playoff round in the Europa League on Thursday night when a 0-0 draw in Slovenia against Maribor made for a 3-1 aggregate win.

Thompson was watching on and thinks the impact Gerrard has made is clear to see, with Rangers now putting a stop to the conceding of sloppy goals.

"You just can't help but be impressed by the impact Gerrard has had", Thompson told BBC Scotland.

"His recruitment has been strong; they are not losing silly goals like last season; every player seems to understand their role in the team."

Gerrard has revamped the coaching staff at Ibrox, bringing in a raft of coaches from Liverpool, along with former Reds player and ambassador Gary McAllister.

Russian side Ufa stand between Rangers and a place in the group stage of the Europa League.

If Gerrard can get past Ufa, it would hand Rangers a big financial boost at a time when the Gers are looking to replace Declan John and Josh Windass, both sold earlier this summer.
