Rangers manager Steven Gerrard says Celtic have had things all their own way in Scottish football for too long and he is aiming to make the Gers competitive for when the big matches come.

The former England international has enjoyed a positive start to his Ibrox reign, with Rangers not losing a game and making their way through to the Europa League playoff round.

Celtic are also in the Europa League playoff round after being knocked out of the Champions League by AEK Athens and hopes are high at Rangers that the Bhoys can finally be challenged domestically.

Gerrard admits that Celtic, with their back to back domestic trebles, have set the standard in Scottish football.

But he is determined to make the Gers competitive as Celtic have had things all their own way.

"Celtic have set the standard up here the last couple of years, they are on the back of two trebles", Gerrard said on BT Sport.

"We understand the task and how difficult the challenge will be, especially with the game being away from home at first.

"But I think the important thing for me is not to be obsessed with Celtic and what's going on over there.

"What's important to me is trying to sort this house out here, which is Rangers, and to try and make Rangers get better, improve individually and collectively, and let's try and be competitive.

"I think Celtic have had it their own way for too long up here.

"My job is to try and improve Rangers so when we do come up against Celtic and any other challenge that we're competitive and we have a chance to win", the Rangers boss added.

Rangers are due to meet Celtic in a Scottish Premiership fixture at the start of September, with Gerrard's men slated to travel to Celtic Park.
