Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has cautioned against anyone getting too excited about Daniel Sturridge’s form because of his history with injuries.

Sturridge was loaned out to West Brom in January, where he failed to score a goal as the Baggies suffered relegation from the Premier League last season.

The England man was all but expected to leave Liverpool in the summer, but the striker returned to Liverpool training fit and ready and bagged a few goals in the pre-season games.

Sturridge also found the back of the net in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over West Ham last weekend and many believe the striker’s second coming has almost been like a new signing for the Reds.

However, Lawrenson is not keen to go overboard just yet in praise of the 28-year-old as despite his all his natural ability as a goalscorer, the striker remains an injury prone player.

The Liverpool legend said on LFC TV’s Preview Show: “Daniel Sturridge has got great ability and you might argue out of the four of them, he can create goals for himself.

“That’s a big thing about Daniel is his finishing is magnificent.

“But he has this massive problem is that he is injury prone and whatever you say, he is injury prone.

“So let’s just wait a little bit.

“Look if he’s back and he’s not injury prone then he is the biggest signings of the summer as he is a very good player.

“But it comes with a big ‘if’.”

Despite his form, Sturridge is rated as unlikely to start when Liverpool take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday night.
