Former West Ham defender Danny Gabbidon has taken aim at the Hammers' poor form this season and questioned why Manuel Pellegrini is leaving a big money centre-back on the bench.

West Ham splashed the cash in the summer transfer window as they backed new boss Pellegrini.

But the side have so far had a start to the season to forget, suffering a 4-0 drubbing at Liverpool and then on Saturday losing 2-1 at home against Bournemouth.

Pellegrini has claimed that last season's form is affecting his players, but Gabbidon has questioned why Issa Diop is on the bench.

The former West Ham star wrote on Twitter: "Two games played, six goals conceded and a £20m centre-back on the bench.

"Is Diop not the guy Pellegrini thought he was or what???"

West Ham dug deep to sign 21-year-old Diop from French side Toulouse and he was touted to be set for a key role in defence.

The fee for the transfer was not disclosed, but has been estimated to be at least £20m.

Diop, who has been capped by France at Under-21 level, has yet to make a senior appearance for the Hammers.
