Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson believes a number of factors could have played a role in Wilfried Zaha not succeeding at Manchester United.

Zaha was Sir Alex Ferguson’s last signing as Manchester United manager, but neither David Moyes nor Louis van Gaal succeeded in getting the best out of him.

The winger struggled to get minutes on the pitch at Old Trafford and had to return to Crystal Palace to rekindle his career again amongst his old surroundings.

The 25-year-old has emerged as one of the best attackers in the Premier League over the last two seasons and Crystal Palace  convinced him to sign a new contract recently amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United fans have lamented at not seeing the best of Zaha, but Lawrenson believes a number of reasons, both on and off the pitch, might have been in play, which stopped the player from giving his best in the north west.

The Liverpool legend feels it is evident that the winger enjoys playing for Crystal Palace and loves the club.

“Maybe it was the wrong time for him.

"I don’t know who was with him in Manchester.

"It’s alright being a footballer on the training pitch, but how you spend the rest of your time as well.

“And they realise that he does.”
