Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has admitted that Jamie Murphy fears a long injury layoff after he was forced off after 15 minutes of the Gers' 3-1 Scottish League Cup win at Kilmarnock.

Murphy fell awkwardly early on in the fixture, on Kilmarnock's artificial pitch, and the jury is out on how long he will be out of action for.

The winger will need to undergo a scan and Gerrard admits Murphy is worried about missing a significant chunk of time.

And the Rangers boss is hoping for good news from the scan as he does not want to lose Murphy's services, considering the wide-man to be a key player.

Gerrard said on Rangers TV: "He's very low at the moment, he's down and upset, and you can understand that.

"He's concerned that he's going to be out for a long time, but we'll keep our fingers crossed and pray, and hopefully he can get some good news when he's assessed and he has a scan on it.

"But whatever happens we'll give him the support he needs – he's a top player, a big player for us and we'll do whatever we can to get him back as quick as we can."

Murphy may be unlikely to be involved on Thursday night when Rangers take on Russian side FC Ufa in the first leg of their Europa League playoff round tie.

Gerrard's men have also discovered their opponents in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, with Ayr United to provide the opposition at Ibrox.
