Hearts attacker Steven Naismith has insisted that team-mate Kyle Lafferty could well stay at the club despite Rangers trying to sign the striker.

Lafferty, who came off the bench against Dunfermline in the second round of the Scottish League Cup at the weekend, has been linked with a move back to his former club, where he enjoyed a successful spell from 2008 to 2012.

The striker cast a huge shadow of doubt on his future at the club when he handed over his shirt to a young fan at the end of proceedings on Saturday, to spark more rumours surrounding an exit.

However, Naismith, who has played alongside the 30-year-old at both Rangers and Norwich City, claims that it is not the first time that the Irishman has ignited such rumours only for him to stay put at the club.

"Kyle's said a few times that's his last game", Naismith told BBC Scotland.

"But then he's turned up a month later. In football, these things happen. If he moves on, he moves on.

"As he's shown today, he'll give his all whenever required.

"But credit to the boys – they've kept him out of the team", he added.

The transfer window in Scotland is still wide open and the transfer saga is expected to have more twists and turns.
