Middlesbrough are closing in on the loan signing of Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic, who has also been linked with Leeds United, according to Sky Sports News.

Both Boro and Leeds were in for Besic on 9th August, the deadline for permanent deals to be done this summer, and Besic opted for the Riverside.

But the deal collapsed, leaving Besic stuck at Goodison Park and Leeds have been linked with rekindling their interest.

The loan window remains open for Championship sides and Middlesbrough are now moving to add Besic to the ranks.

Tony Pulis' side have agreed a deal in principle for Besic's signature and the Bosnian held talks with the Championship club on Sunday night.

He has since returned to Merseyside to resolve an issue with Everton, but it appears increasingly likely he will be heading to Middlesbrough on loan.

Boro appear to have held on to pole position in Besic's thoughts, with Leeds continuing to be out of the picture for the midfielder.

It remains to be seen whether the deal will have an option for Middlesbrough to sign Besic on a permanent basis when the transfer window for permanent deals swings back open in January.

Besic spent the second half of last term on loan at Middlesbrough.
