Rangers defender James Tavernier has claimed that Steven Gerrard has made the Gers fitter and they are now reaping the rewards as a consequence.

Gerrard's men cruised to a 3-1 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday in a Scottish League Cup second round clash at Rugby Park, thanks to a scintillating hat-trick from Alfredo Morelos.

Tavernier, who played the full 90 minutes of the game, went on to applaud the application of the Gers while also revealing that Gerrard deserves the lion’s share of the credit for making them a fitter unit over the course of the summer.

The 26-year-old also commented on Morelos, who has now taken his tally of goals to six for the season after an impressive performance away from home at Kilmarnock.

“As soon as the gaffer came in, he spoke about everyone being in prime condition and our body fat was to be in prime condition”, Tavernier told Rangers TV.

“The running we did in Marbella was hard and you can see the benefits.

“We played on Thursday night but we looked fitter today and I think Alfredo is seeing the benefits of it – he is looking unbelievably sharp and he has been a real, big asset for us in the games”, he added.

Rangers will now face Ayr United in the quarter-final of the competition and barring a big shock, Gerrard could well be guiding the Gers to a semi-final within six months of his appointment.
