Steven Thompson says he is confident about Rangers reaching the Europa League group stage after beating FC Ufa on Thursday night at Ibrox.

The Gers were looking to earn an advantage ahead of a second leg in Russia and won 1-0 thanks to a Connor Goldson goal in the 41st minute.

Goldson finished from close range just minutes before the half time break and it proved to be the only goal of the game.

But despite the slender advantage that Steven Gerrard's men will take to Russia, Thompson is unconcerned and thinks the solid nature of the Gers defence means they will progress in the tie.

Thompson, a former Rangers striker, said on BBC Sportsound: "Looking at Rangers' defence at the minute, I've got no fears about them away from home in Russia.

"I am fairly confident they will go through."

Ufa have now lost three of their last four games in all competitions and have no let up in sight with a clash against giants Zenit St. Petersburg next up.

The second leg, at home against Rangers, comes next Thursday.
