Liverpool legend Gary Gillespie has backed Loris Karius' decision to move to Turkish side Besiktas.

The goalkeeper has completed a loan switch to Besiktas from Liverpool and will spend the next two years plying his trade in Turkey with the Black Eagles.

Karius, who made two disastrous errors in the Champions League final at the end of last season, lost his place as Liverpool's number 1 this summer when the Reds signed Alisson.

Gillespie thinks a move to Besiktas is a good idea for Karius and has not completely written off the goalkeeper coming back to Liverpool at the end of his two-year loan.

"I think it's a massive decision for him but I think it's the right decision as well", the former Liverpool defender said on LFC TV.

"To rebuild your career without all that's gone before in the Champions League.

"He's still a young man and there's loads of potential for him to become a top goalkeeper, and I am sure he will some day.

"I think it's the right decision.

"Hopefully he goes there and is a success. Who knows what can happen. We've seen players go and then come back and be superstars."

Gillespie also insists that Karius will not have an easy ride in Istanbul, with Besiktas being a club that demand success.

"Big club as well, he's gone to a top club in Turkish football. So there will be big games there and he will have to perform."

Besiktas have started the new Turkish Super Lig season in good form, winning both their two games so far, and are next in action this evening when they play host to Antalyaspor.
