Former Switzerland and Liverpool defender Philipp Degen has insisted that Xherdan Shaqiri’s complaints about the quality at Stoke City were uncalled for and he should remember that he was part of the squad that were relegated last season.

Liverpool snapped up the winger from Stoke in the summer after the Potters were relegated and has played just eight minutes of football in the Reds' first three Premier League games.

There were complaints about Shaqiri’s attitude at Stoke, but the winger has also been vocal about their lack of quality since leaving the relegated club at the end of last season.

However, Degen believes Shaqiri needs to watch his words and thinks it has been a theme of the winger’s career, saying that the player must show humility as he was an integral part of the Stoke squad who underperformed last season.

Speaking about the Swiss winger, the former Liverpool defender told Zwolf: “Apparently his media training has completely failed. How can a player say that?

“He also said during his time in Germany that any club apart from Bayern Munich would be a step down for him. These are absolute no-go [comments]!

“Everything in life will catch up with you at some point. I always tell my players – always imagine yourself as a mirror and be humble.

“One should not forget, Stoke got relegated with him in the team.”

Degen also believes part of the reason Liverpool signed him in the summer is because he was a low cost option in terms of the value of players in England.

“From Liverpool’s point of view, it was a compensation deal.

“He was cheap for English conditions.”
