Girona have rekindled their interest in signing Celtic linked midfielder Douglas Luiz and are currently the frontrunners to land him.

Manchester City signed the Brazilian from Vasco da Gama last season before he was loaned out to Girona for the rest of the season.

Pep Guardiola wanted to keep Luiz at Manchester City this season but the club’s application for a work permit for the midfielder was rejected by the UK Home office.

He was linked with a loan move to Celtic and the speculation gained traction as the work permit rules in Scotland are less stringent, but the midfielder is unlikely to move north of the border.

And according to Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo, the Brazilian is likely to return to Girona for another loan stint as Manchester City look to find a club for him in the final stretch of the window.

Portuguese giants Porto and Benfica, and Turkish giants Fenerbahce, were also interested in signing Luiz on loan, but they wanted to include an option to buy, something Manchester City are not willing to agree to.

Girona are interested in signing a midfielder before Friday’s deadline and have gone back to the option of re-signing the Manchester City man on another loan deal.

The City Football Group are part owners of the Spanish club and therefore, Girona are unlikely to face any hurdles in getting the deal over the line with the Premier League champions.
