An intense one-on-one conversation between Moussa Dembele and Brendan Rodgers on Friday led to the Celtic manager deciding to eventually sell the player on deadline day.

Celtic finally decided to bite the bullet and sell the 22-year-old striker to Lyon in the last hours of the summer transfer window.

However, Rodgers categorically stated on Thursday night that Dembele would not be allowed to leave as Celtic did not have the time to bring in an adequate replacement.

The Frenchman was left infuriated by the Celtic manager’s stated positon and was under the impression the club had assured him that he would be allowed to leave this summer.

Dembele reported for training and according to French sports daily L’Equipe, he had a heated stand-off with the Celtic boss before speaking one-on-one.

It has been claimed that the striker accused the Northern Irishman of lying and following a conversation between the two, Rodgers was convinced that it was an untenable situation.

And the Celtic manager finally relented and allowed the Frenchman to return to his homeland with Lyon.

Rodgers indicated in a statement on Friday night that he decided to sell Dembele to maintain the harmony and atmosphere within his squad this season.
