Nigel Spackman thinks two of his former clubs, Chelsea and Liverpool, will both understand the importance of progress in the EFL Cup this season as they bid to lift a trophy.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has yet to win a trophy in his managerial career, while Jurgen Klopp has not delivered any silverware for Liverpool since taking over in 2015.

Spackman sees the EFL Cup as the easiest major trophy to win and with Chelsea and Liverpool set to meet in the third round at Anfield, he thinks both will be desperate to progress.

"The EFL Cup is the easiest competition to win out of all of them", Spackman said on LFC TV.

"Chelsea will be thinking exactly the same as Liverpool, which is if we can get past this game then we've got a great opportunity to go on and win some silverware or at least get to a final.

"I think that is how Jurgen will look at it this year. He wants to win silverware.

"So I think he needs to put a fairly strong team out, but some players need game time anyway."

Both Chelsea and Liverpool have a perfect record so far in the Premier League, winning all four of their league games and collecting eight points.

Chelsea last won the EFL Cup in 2015, while Liverpool lifted the trophy in 2012 and have won the competition the most times, with eight successes.
