Former Manchester United defender David May believes Jose Mourinho is well within his right if he snaps back at his detractors.

Mourinho and his Manchester United side were under pressure going into the Burnley game and were in desperate need of a performance after back-to-back defeats.

A brace from Romelu Lukaku was good enough to earn all three points for Manchester United at Turf Moor and it allowed Mourinho to breathe a sigh of relief after an intense two weeks’ scrutiny.

May believes the amount of speculation and criticism Mourinho has attracted in recent weeks has been excessive and says the Manchester United manager should snap back if he wants.

He feels it must be tiring for him to read and hear people constantly attacking him and his coaching style.

The former Red Devil said on MUTV’s The Paddy Crerand Show: “He doesn’t have to prove himself, but he does [need to get back at his critics].
