Manchester United were ready to put Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin put through a medical on Premier League deadline day, it has been claimed.

Jose Mourinho wanted to sign a centre-back on the final days of the Premier League transfer window, but Manchester United failed to bring in one as a mad scramble ensued towards the end.

Godin’s name emerged as a possible target on the final day of the transfer window and Manchester United did launch an approach to sign the centre-back as part of their plans.

However, the negotiations never took off as Godin showed little interest in leaving Atletico Madrid and refused an offer to join the Premier League giants.

But it seems Manchester United were hopeful of signing him and according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, they were even ready to put the defender through his paces for a medical on deadline day.

The 32-year-old is expected to be offered a new contract at Atletico Madrid in the coming days to extend his stay beyond next summer when his current deal expires.

There were suggestions Manchester United’s interest was used as a bargaining chip by the player’s agent to force the Spanish giants to offer him better terms and the Red Devils were believed to be fuming.

However, Godin has refuted claims that he used Manchester United as a negotiating chip with Atletico Madrid.
