Former Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat, who played under Steve McClaren at St. James' Park, has cast doubt on the Englishman's managerial ability.

Janmaat, who is now on the books at Watford, turned out for Newcastle from 2014 until 2016.

McClaren, the current boss of Championship outfit QPR, bossed the Magpies between 2015 and 2016, with Janmaat at his disposal.

But the former FC Twente, Wolfsburg and Derby County boss did not leave a good impression, with Janmaat considering him to be more of a coach than a manager.

"A great guy, a good coach on the pitch, but as a manager there was a lot of things [missing]", Janmaat told Dutch daily the Algemeen Dagblad.

"He could have been louder, more able to make his mark on certain things."

And the former Newcastle man summed up his view of McClaren, adding: "An excellent coach on the pitch, who happens to be a manager."

McClaren is currently under pressure at QPR, with the Loftus Road outfit having taken just four points from their opening six league games to sit 22nd in the Championship.

The former England boss won just seven of his 31 games in charge at Newcastle, ultimately being shown the door by the Magpies in March 2016.
