Scotland Football Association performance director Malky Mackay believes that Rangers have given Scotland and Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour a good grounding and platform to kick on from.

Rangers were keen to keep hold of Gilmour, recognising his talent and potential, and tried to sell a future at Ibrox to the midfielder.

However, the Gers failed and Gilmour departed to join Premier League giants Chelsea.

He is continuing to excite in the youth ranks for Scotland and Mackay, who admits the football association have been aware of him from the age of 11, feels Rangers did a good job to give Gilmour the basis needed to progress.

"He's got a lot of potential", Mackay was quoted as saying by BBC Scotland.

"He's been on our radar since he was 11 years old and Craig Mulholland and the academy coaches at Rangers have given him a fabulous grounding.

"He's now taken another step – which is a very brave step to take, going down to Chelsea – and he's hit the ground running", the performance director added.

The 17-year-old has already turned out for Chelsea's Under-23s this season, appearing in the Premier League 2 and in the EFL Trophy.

Chelsea have Gilmour under contract until the summer of 2021.
