Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has insisted that Jose Mourinho’s side can still challenge for the Premier League title despite a slow start to the season.

Mourinho’s men have lost two out of their first four Premier League games and are already playing catch up with title rivals such as Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Manchester United’s hopes of winning the league title for the first time since 2013 have been dented by a poor start and not many are expecting them to land a serious challenge this year either.

However, Robson has not lost hope and believes the current Manchester United side could emulate Sir Alex Ferguson’s first league title-winning team, who also made a slow start in the 1992/93 campaign.

He is aware of the poor start to the season, but believes there are clear signs that the balance and the shape of the team are coming together, which will pay dividends going forward.

The former midfielder told the Manchester Evening News: "People are saying it's similar with 92/93 when we had a slow start but went on to win the title.

“I think this squad definitely can challenge and be up there. It was a little bit disappointing a start. Everyone understands that.

“But there have been a few performances, Antonio Valencia coming back into the team, Nemanja Matic, some of the World Cup players looking that bit sharper in the Burnley game.

"You can see the balance and shape of the team coming together."

Mourinho has so far refused to clarify whether he believes Manchester United can challenge for the league this season.
