Former Fulham midfielder Seko Fofana believes Moussa Dembele is worth double the amount Celtic received for him from Lyon in the final hours of the transfer window.

Dembele went to war with Brendan Rodgers on the final day of the transfer window to force his way out of Celtic and join Ligue 1 giants Lyon in the recently concluded window.

Celtic were not keen to sell him at the last minute, but the striker had a heated war of words with Rodgers on deadline day, which made it clear that his position at the club was untenable.

Lyon snared him away from the Scottish champions for a fee of around €22m, but Fofana believes the sum is half of what Dembele is worth at the moment as he is more or less a complete centre-forward.

He told French sports daily L’Equipe: “I am surprised that clubs didn’t come in to take him [away from Celtic] earlier.

“It was told it [the transfer fee] was €20m from Lyon, but Moussa is worth at least double that figure.

“He’s a complete striker – he can score with his head, left foot, right foot and defend.”

Fofana, who played alongside Dembele at Fulham, believes the striker has everything at Lyon to develop into an elite footballer, especially by playing in the Champions League with the Ligue 1 giants.

“I am happy to see him sign for Lyon as he is going to be a major player with the demands of the Champions League.

“They have everything you need for it to be a beneficial [move for Dembele].”
