Liverpool legend John Aldridge has warned Tottenham Hotspur that the Reds have made considerable progress since their embarrassing defeat at Wembley last season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were given a hiding at Wembley in October last year when Tottenham produced a masterclass performance in a 4-1 win for the north London side.

Liverpool’s defensive failings were laid bare against a well drilled Tottenham attack, but Aldridge believes the Reds have made significant improvements since then.

Ahead of their trip to Wembley this weekend, Aldridge feels Liverpool have a defensive leader in the form of Virgil van Dijk and a world-class goalkeeper in Alisson at the back.

And he admits that the pair will need to be on top of their game on Saturday when Liverpool look to bury the memories of last season’s embarrassing defeat against Tottenham.

Aldridge wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo: “The defeat at Wembley last year was hard to take but we’ve come a long way since then.

“We’re a better team now than we were then.

“We’ve got a leader at the back and goalkeeper who is a leader as well.

“We will need that against Tottenham because they have got some really good player who we’ll need to keep at bay.”

Tottenham are coming into the game on the back of a shock defeat at Watford before the international break, something which has put pressure on Mauricio Pochettino's men to bounce back quickly.
