Manchester United midfielder Fred has stressed the importance of doing well at Old Trafford in order to keep earning call ups to play for the Brazil national team.

The Premier League giants confirmed the midfielder’s signature from Shakhtar Donetsk before he flew to Russia with the Brazil squad for the World Cup in the summer.

Fred picked up an injury just before the start of the World Cup and while he was part of the squad, he did not play a single minute of football during Brazil’s run to the quarter-finals.

The midfielder feels if he was in top shape, he could have played more football in Russia during the summer, but admits that being part of the tournament was in itself a brilliant experience for him personally.

And he insisted that he needs to continue to produce the goods for Manchester United in order to keep being selected for the Selecao.

Fred told the club’s official website: “Unfortunately, I suffered an injury in the lead-up to the World Cup.

“I wanted to play in the World Cup – I think if I had been 100 per cent fit I could’ve played.

"But it was an incredible experience, just to be involved with the national team in a World Cup, like so many other players and legends had done so before me.

“It was an honour for me, and like I said I want to be involved in World Cups in the future.

“I’ll keep working hard here at Manchester United so that the manager keeps picking me for the national team.”

Fred played an hour in Brazil’s 2-0 win over the United States last Saturday.
